ADHD may lead to Substance Abuse in Youth

With substance abuse being a leading cause of overdose, researchers and examiners were unknown to the causes of substance abuse disorders. From a psychodynamic viewpoint developed by Sigmund Freud, an influential psychologist that embarked history, he believed that adult’s emotions and behaviors are grounded from our childhood encounters. Due to the new study based on ADHD, another validation concluded to Freud’s theory, “children suffering from attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are more than twice as likely to try and abuse drugs, a new analysis finds.” (Reinberg, 2014)

Concerned parents instantly treat children who are suffering with ADHD with medications and substances creating calmness, tranquility, and composure for children, but constitutes a sense of comfort to medication that will help to control troubles, in adult years. Antitoxins have become an easy route to curing any form of illness, even for adults. As humans we latch onto quick gratification, such as going to see a doctor, paying what is known as a “co-pay” of $50, to tell doctors about all of our concerns, which took about 20 minutes to gather in a 2 second diagnosis, which requires medication in order to “feel better.” Individuals settle for comfort and when we are comfortable, change is almost impossible. Similar to children, we force for them to take medications, what is then preserved as the only life line to curing everything and anything. Unfortunately parents are oblivious to what they are actually causing.

With plenty of other methods and techniques, medication has become a simple route. With excessive commitment and proper time management, parents can aid to possible substance abuse disorders.  “"Counseling is important, and awareness is the key to preventing the problems," he added.” (Reinberg, 2014)
